What is robotics?
Robotics has been in the heads of humans in the form of humanoids. Due to several movies, people have a perception that it is something that looks like humans and will be able to work as a human. In terms of looks of a robot, it can be anything starting from a human or any animal or any other shape as well but as we said it is going to make the life of humans easier.
History of robotics
Robotics has a very old history starting from the year 1920 where the name was served. The term robot was derived from the word artificial automation in the year 1920. The first robot invented that could speak was in 1920 and called it Eric. W.H Richards presented Eric in an annual exhibition. Eric the robot was also able to deliver a speech at that time.
Westinghouse electric corporation built a robot that was connected to many devices to perform basic on and off. In 1939 Westinghouse electric corporation built a humanoid robot which was called Elektro which could walk, speak 700 words and also record audio at that time.
After this, the technology kept improving and many others kept developing new robots that could perform many tasks. Currently, we have autonomous robots that are capable of performing human-like tasks. Many industries are making use of such robots to perform their day to day tasks.
Applications of Robotics
There are numerous applications of robotics in the industries. All the industries are trying to implement robotics technology to automate their industry and to stay ahead. There are numerous uses of robotics in our day to day activity. Let us see how robotics technology is transforming industries:
Robotics in Manufacturing:
Robots are changing the way we look at the manufacturing industry. In the manufacturing sector, robots are designed and programmed to perform certain tasks. Robots are used to automate the manufacturing process. The use of robots is certainly improving product quality and productivity.
Robotics in Healthcare:
Robotics in healthcare is still an early phase to be using. In the future, we can see robotics transforming the healthcare industry. There would be robot surgeons who is capable of performing operations and surgery. The Healthcare sector would be making use of robots to analyze the data of patients this way they would be able to know the problems at an early stage. This would be a great revolution in the healthcare sector.
Robotics in Education:
Robotics like any other sector is being programmed to be implemented in the education industry as well. We can see robots who will be teaching classes for the students and for a better understanding of the students. In a classroom with around 50–80 students it becomes difficult for a teacher to see if each and every student is able to understand their teaching. Some students require extra attention and care. Whereas a robot will be able to study the face and expression of every student and understand his or her requirements.
Robotics in Human Resource(HR):
It is a great change for the human resource(HR) industry to be making use of robots for the tasks. Robots are used to evaluate a test or take an interview of the candidate. This way the process will be very smooth compared to the normal hiring process. A robot could as well be programmed to perform tasks like the creation of spreadsheets, data entry and so on.
Robotics in Telecom:
The telecommunication industry needs a lot of accurate work to be done in the process. The use of robots in telecom reduces errors, improves data quality, boosts customer service, while also making a significant contribution to cost reduction.
Robotics in Military:
Military tasks are something in which sometimes people can lose their lives. Making use of robots to an extent can save lot of lives in the military. Robots could be programmed to be sent in a war for the attack, rescue operations, and also for normal patrolling. This way we can have a look at the conditions with a camera set on the robot as well.
Robotics in Automobile:
The automotive manufacturing industry has been one of the fastest and the quickest to be making use of industrial robots. Collaborative robots are built to work with other robots. These robots are used to performs tasks such as assembling, welding, and also joining parts altogether. Robots are also used to perform the painting operations of the automobiles.
Advantages of robotics
There are various benefits of robotics being implemented in the industries. That is the reason all the industries are trying to automate the business process.
- Automation — Industries are looking to automate their process that can increase the production and quality of the products.
- Works 24/7 — A robot can be programmed to work 24/7. A human working always has a set timing, whereas robots can be programmed to work the entire day still not be tired. This increases production and thus leading to be better sales and revenue.
- Surveillance and security — Robotics can be used for the surveillance process or for security.
- Less Error: Since robots are programmed to do certain tasks there will be fewer errors compared to the work done by humans. The speed of work will also be faster.
- Does Boring Work: Sometimes it becomes boring to do tasks like data entry, creating a spreadsheet and all those small works which is boring for human tendency so these tasks can be given to robot to perform and it would be done at a faster pace.
